OCEANSIDE, NEW YORK – Matthew Kear, a beloved father, son, brother, and police officer. Matthew, died on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Oceanside, New York. He was 34.
Born on April 17, 1990, in Oceanside, Matthew spent his entire life in this tight-knit community. He was known from a young age for his compassion and deep sense of duty. Matthew graduated from Oceanside High School in 2008 and pursued his dream of becoming a police officer, a career he felt called to. Serving the community he loved, Matthew was known for his hard work, fairness, and unwavering commitment to protecting others. His colleagues at the Oceanside Police Department admired him for his dedication and the kindness he brought to his work.
While Matthew wore his badge with pride, the weight of the job took its toll. Like many in his profession, he faced the challenges of mental and emotional strain. Despite his outward strength, Matthew quietly struggled with depression, a battle he ultimately faced alone. His tragic passing is a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the need for greater support for those who serve in demanding roles.
Beyond his work, Matthew was cherished for his sense of humor, his infectious smile, and his love for his family. He found joy in the simple things—playing board games with his younger sister, Emily, or sharing laughs during family meals. Matthew also loved spending time by the ocean, where he often sought peace and calm. The sound of the waves and the serenity of the shore provided him a sense of comfort, something that will forever be linked to his memory.
His death leaves a void that cannot be filled. Friends, family, and colleagues are all deeply mourning the loss of someone who touched their lives in so many ways. Matthew’s passing is not just a tragedy for those close to him but for the entire Oceanside community, which he served with devotion and care.
Matthew is survived by his loving parents, Richard and Anne Kear, and his sister, Emily, as well as an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, who played a significant role in his upbringing and whom he missed dearly.
In memory of Matthew, his family encourages everyone to reach out to those who might be struggling. A small gesture—a kind word or a phone call—could make all the difference in someone’s life. His passing reminds us of the importance of asking for help, being open about our mental health, and supporting one another through difficult times.
The family has expressed their heartfelt thanks to the Oceanside Police Department, friends, and community members for their outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Matthew’s commitment to his job and the relationships he formed within the department were sources of immense pride for him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who worked alongside him.
A funeral service for Matthew will be held at St. Anthony’s Church in Oceanside on Thursday, January 29, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Oceanside VFW Hall following the service to celebrate his life. There will also be visiting hours at Towers Funeral Home on Wednesday and Thursday, January 29 and 30, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or a local mental health charity. It is their hope that through these contributions, others may find the support they need before it’s too late.
Matthew Kear will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and love. His memory will forever be cherished, and the impact he had on those around him will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Officer Matthew Kear.
