As his family, friends, and the Hana community mourn his loss, they also celebrate the legacy of a remarkable man whose impact will forever be felt.
Born on June 15th, 1956, in Charleston, West Virginia, Glen was the son of Bruce and Eleanor Simkins. From a young age, he exhibited a curiosity about the world and a thirst for adventure. His love for nature took root early, and throughout his life, he found beauty and peace in the natural world. This deep connection to the environment would shape not only his personal life but also his professional journey.
After graduating from high school in West Virginia, Glen moved to the West Coast to pursue his college education. It was there that he discovered his true calling: environmental conservation. He devoted much of his career to preserving natural resources and advocating for environmental justice. His work earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and communities alike. Glen was deeply committed to the belief that every small action could have a lasting impact, and his passion for the environment was matched only by his love for humanity.
In 2003, after years of living on the mainland, Glen made the decision to move to Hana, Hawaii—a place that had always captured his heart. The peaceful beauty of Hana, with its lush landscapes and deep sense of community, drew him in, and he quickly made it his home. Here, Glen found the perfect balance between his professional life and his personal happiness. He immersed himself in the community, becoming involved in local environmental projects and offering his expertise to anyone who needed it.
Whether helping local farmers, volunteering at the Hana Community Center, or lending a hand to a neighbor in need, Glen was always ready to give. His generosity of spirit was evident in everything he did. He was known for his warm heart, infectious sense of humor, and the way he made people feel seen and heard. His love for the Hana community was matched only by his deep affection for the island’s natural beauty, which he worked tirelessly to protect.
In addition to his environmental work, Glen was an active participant in the social and cultural life of Hana. He loved the island’s close-knit community and cherished the friendships he built over the years. His wisdom, kindness, and ability to listen made him a beloved figure in the town, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
At the core of Glen’s life was his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Linda, whom he married in 1982. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Linda was not only his partner in life but also his best friend and confidante. Their bond was one of mutual respect and deep love, and it was the foundation of Glen’s happiness.
Glen and Linda were proud parents to two children, Sarah and Adam, who were the light of his life. As a father, Glen was patient, wise, and loving. He instilled in his children a deep sense of responsibility for the world around them and was always there to offer guidance, support, and a listening ear. His love for his children was boundless, and he found immense joy in watching them grow into thoughtful, caring individuals.
In addition to his children, Glen was a proud grandfather to three grandchildren—Ava, Caleb, and Isaac—who filled his heart with joy. He loved sharing stories with them, teaching them about the natural world, and simply enjoying their company. His legacy of love, compassion, and environmental stewardship will continue through them.
In his final years, Glen faced a battle with illness, but he faced it with the same courage and strength that defined his life. Even as his health declined, he found peace in the simple joys of life—Hana’s beaches, family gatherings, and the love of his community. Glen’s spirit remained strong, and he continued to offer words of wisdom and encouragement to those around him.
